Han Dynasty - Horse Head
A Han Dynasty terracotta horse head with a very animated expression. Known as the "Tian Ma" or 'heavenly horse'. It is recorded of being capable of running a thousand li (310 miles) a day and of sweating blood. The desire of the Han ruling class to own "Tian Ma" led to their enthusiasm for horse models to furnish their graves. To illustrate the legend of the Tian Ma sweating blood, red pigment was often used.

Traces of red pigmentation on the straps on the horse head. The horse head has abrasion , wear and tear due to the long period of burial. Otherwise it is in good condition.
